This painting was inspired by a walk in the southern woods protected by the Lowcountry Land Trust. This land is enriched with a bounty of history preserved by community conservation efforts, but I believe it should also be honored by art. Praise houses were built on plantations as establishments of worship, initially for enslaved people. Following emancipation, these spaces were used for community and leadership opportunities for African Americans. The light and vibrancy of this painting is used to highlight the importance of history and how we can learn to reflect and adapt with time to a more peaceful place.
